I picked up a couple of old scout books at a local swap meet, and
wondered if anyone could help me find out some values on them.
One is titled "How Book of Cubbing" and is in excellent condition. It is
a goldenrod(?) hardbound book with the copyright date of 1943, cat no.
3505 (in very small print at the bottom of the title page.
Second is a very worn, dark blue with gold foil highlights hard cover
book called "The Boy Scouts Book of Stories" by Franklin K. Matthews,
chief Scout Librarian, published for Boy Scouts of America, copyright
Third is a very worn, coverless scout handbook, and I have no idea how to
find out the year it was made. I am hoping some of you can give me a
clue. Because there is no cover, the top page shows a boy scout with a
"smokey bear" hat (Sorry I dont know what they are really called),
chiselling the Scout Emblem under the rest of the tablet "A SCOUT IS
TRUSTWORTHY LOYAL; HELPFUL COURTEOUS KIND - OBEDIENT CHEERFUL THRIFTY
BRAVE - CLEAN REVEREVENT" etc.
Then it shows drawings of the different badges ranks & patrol
positions(which are all square), medals, and merit badges (khaki circles
with green trim), and a picture of how to wear the uniform (smokey bear
hat, knee length shorts, khaki knee socks (no red stripe), with a
"community strip" as the shoulder patch.
It also depicts boys in breeches(sp?) in various pictures inside, and has
some funny (for nowadays) adds in the back, like one for Mercurochrome
(dibrom-oxymercuri-fluorescein-sodium) to cure infections, which I think
would be considered poisonous today (mercury)? and a coca-cola 5 cents
ad, copyright 1942. (Maybe that is the date of this handbook?)
Anyway, I'd like to know a value on these, or what resources I can use to
Any info will be greatly appreciated.
