I'm posting this to the list for others that might be headed this way.
One nice place to camp is Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. It is
located right on Lake Superior about 20 miles north of Two Harbors, MN on
route US 61. It has showers and flush toilets. There are 20 walk-in
campsites, 4 backpack campsites, a visitor center, an 8 mile hiking trail,
and even a gift shop. The most unique thing about the park, which your boys
should like, it the historic Split Rock Lighthouse and history center.
Call or write them at:

Another great option is Tettegouche State Park. Even if you camp at
Split Rock Lighthouse you should do a quick stop here. Tettegouche is
located about 5 miles east of Silver Bay, Minnesota on US 61. There's
over 4,500 acres, showers, flush toilets, 28 drive in campsites, 6 walk
in campsites, visitor center, 16 miles of hiking trails, and is the
location of the High Falls on the Baptism River, the highest waterfall in
the state of Minnesota.

If the two previous locations are full, here are three more.
Temperence River State Park is located one mile north of Schroeder on US
61. 200 acres, 50 drive in campsites, showers, flush toilets, 8 miles of
hiking trails, and it's best feature, the Temperence River Gorge, which
has a number of smaller waterfalls in a beautiful narrow gorge. A great
place to hike.

Schroeder, Minnesota 55613
Cascade River State park is located about 20 miles northeast of Tofte,
Minnesota. It has over 2800 acres with 39 drive in sites, showers, flush
toilets, 5 backpack campsites, and a GROUP CAMP. There are 18 miles of
hiking trails that are up and down hills offering beautiful views of Lake
Cascade River State Park
HCR 3, Box 450
Lutsen, MN 55612
Judge C.R. Magney State Park is almost at Grand Portage, just 20 miles
southwest on US 61. Over 4500 acres, 36 drive in campsites, 6 miles of
trails, and it's most unique feature is Devil's Kettle Waterfall.
Judge C.R. Magney State Park
East Star Route, Box 500
Grand Marias, MN 55604
The first two listed are about 1/2 way between Duluth and Grand Portage
and would be my first choices. All five parks are very nice places to
camp. Good luck on your trip.
