For starters, it was NOT mentioned at all during the local NBC affialite's
newscast yesterday evening during the 10pm newscast.
I am going over there today to find out why and to talk with one
of the senior reporters.
On this morning's CNN and Company, Mary Tilloson had three folks that had
various feelings on the matter...one man (I didn't catch his name, I was in
and out of the officeroom while it was on) stated that we should shield
younger children from events like this because it could do nothing but
further their feelings that nothing can protect them. Maybe that's what the
local TV station
As Scouters, I think that we need to insure that we use the YPP to
insure that those that work with youth meet our highest standards.
"Would you want this person to babysit your children? Take them
on an extended trip?" are the kind of questions we should be asking of those
wanting to serve as advisors of youth.
CNN's reporter in Scotland, Arthur Kent, stated that this person was a KNOWN
"harmer of children" and that he expressed his desires
openly. He was also thrown out of working with boys in other
organizations outside of the Scout Association. I don't like the
media's connection of "Scoutmaster" and "pedophile", and it really
grates me when they make that connection, as if that's the only way that the
man could have interacted. Then, the media is not
fully aware of the name of the leader that works with YOUNGER boys, a Den
Leader or a Cubmaster, and "hones in" on the "Scoutmaster" title because its
more publically "known".
Finally, this strenghtens my *personal opinion* for firearm control and
registration in this country, despite my lapsed membership in the NRA and my
political stance. England has more of a strong firearm policy but yet this
guy was able to get and keep firearms...and to use them on children before
ending his life.
I add my and my wife's prayers to those families, whose children
could have been Scouts in a couple of years. May they find peace.
As Jessiann stated last night, "that man's having to answer for his deeds
right now, so we don't have to worry about that."
(we have fighting cats and Jessi's really concerned about this. I have them
separated, but we can't keep them cooped up forever!
