Ed Darrell was writing about why The Boy Scouts of America do not get good
press these days.
It is extra timely in light of the tragic news over in Scotland of the man
who senselessly gunned down those schoolchildren. The reports I saw on CNN
throughout the night all started with "Scoutmaster and gun fanatic".
While the two events may not have an initial link, it is an opportunity for
someone in the Scouting movement in texas to step forward and talk in great
detail about how we all go through Youth Participation Training to prevent
things like this from happening here. It is this devotion and dedication to
youth protection issues that is attracting the Clinton people to a public
reception with BSA.
The Clinton people will be emphasizing their record on children and family
issues throughout the upcoming campaign, and this ceremony will help them do
so. The question will be if BSA will be savvy enough to take advantage of
There was also an earlier question regarding Cub Scouts appearing in recent
pictures at Pat Buchanan and Steve Forbes campaign stops. The policy of the
Boy Scouts is clear on this; it's against our practices to have Cub Scouts
appearing at political events. In fact, the Gramm campaign was rebuked for
having Sen. Gramm pose with a Boy Scout at a campaign stop in Iowa.
Anyone out there know if President Clinton was given the Silver Buffalo as
BSA has done to previous presidents?
