I've used Cubmate, PackTraker and now PackMaster and PackLedger.
The latter are by far the best. It will be more of an investment
initially but it will more than be worth it in the long run. In this
instance you do get what you pay for.
Naturally you would want the Troop version of the program but at a basic
level they should be similar. Most all these programs have demos
available on the net or elsewhere. Troopmaster will send a demo for
$5.00 which covers their costs and is credited to you should you buy the
Cubmate appears to be very good but after you work with it for a while
you find it has mounds of data fields you will never get around to doing
and the Add Scout screens go six pages deep. It has a very simplistic
checkbook, library, assets etc. most of which could have been done in any
database. The main problem is the reports. It does not come with enough
standard reports and it does not allow you to easily create, change or
produce your own reports. The data can not be easily exported to another
database. Since output is one of the most important aspects of this type
of program I would not recommend Cubmate on this point alone. It simply
does not furnish enough output alternatives for most groups.
Tracker is a quick and dirty program and is also inexpensive. It is very
simple to use and does not have many menu choices either.
PackMaster keeps track of everything. If you add PackLedger you can also
track Fundraisers, Budgets, Checkbook, Asset, etc. Together they are a
number crunchers dream. You have all the basic reports you need and then
some. The program also allows ASCII file export so the data may easily
be exported to another program should that be required.
In any case I would highly recommend you try all three and there might be
one or two others around. Check the back of "Scouting" magazine. Your
needs may not be the same as ours and one of the simpler programs may be
all you need.
Good Luck, Jess
