The Jamboree is TEN DAYS, with a day on either end to allow for "early birds"
and "black birds", those contingents arriving earlier than the official
start day and leaving after the official ending date.
The actual "breakdown" needs to come from your Council, Rick. Ask them
to provide you a breakdown of the fees. Normally, they shouldn't have
a problem with that request, because it's one of those "FAQs" that they
SHOULD be prepared for (FAQ, for those not familiar, is "frequently asked
questions", an Internet term which applies here).
Basically, you are paying for several categories of fees and supplies:
FOOD (enroute and returning; the Jamboree fee includes food during the event)
TRANSPORTATION (as you stated, airfare, but also busfare to and from the
Jamboree site...this is NOT free)
INSURANCE (again, enroute and returning, since the Jambo fee includes insurance
during the event)
INSIGNIA AND PATCHES (special CSPs, backpatches, hat pins, neckerchiefs and
other goodies given to the Scout/Scouter, given out to Scouts for trades)
HOUSING (enroute and returning; the days of just staying in Army Reserve or
National Guard centers/Armories are just about over with; it may involve
staying in a hotel a night before leaving or returning)
INCIDENTALS and EMERGENCY fund (in case, Lord forbid, you have to send a Scout
or Scouter home, or in case whereby the plane is diverted or cancelled)
ADMINISTRATION AND COMMUNICATION (to pay for the COUNCIL'S PROMOTION and
ADMINSTRATION of the Jamboree, and to pay for the mailouts and other items.
Some Councils budget this into their operating budgets; others, because
they have to budget things out four years out, can't do this and therefore
they include it as a cost)
EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS (not just the tentage and related items, but also things
like the gateway and other confort items for the Jamboree contingent)
(Some Councils also include a percentage of the fees for the adult Jamboree
to defray their costs in going slightly)
PRE-JAMBOREE TRAINING (to pay for the costs associated with training the
members in advance of the Jamboree...food, tentage, etc.)
The actual costs of attending the Jamboree, again, Rick, will vary from local
Council to local Council, and is no set fee overall.
Again, the Sam Houston Council should have a listing of all of the fees and
associated with the Jamboree. The Jamboree staff member assigned by your
Executive should be able to provide you with the exact costs and where it's all
Hope this helps (and Jambo folks, if I've left anything out, please add it!)
