Just read Judy Barnetts e-mail. Judy says their Pack has a 95% success
rate for Tiger dens and Webelo 2's into Boy Scouting. I am a Cub
Master of a Pack that for the past 3 years have a 100% rate for Tiger
But, our Tigers meet 2 times a month and one Pack Meeting before
January and every Pack event after. We don't run them like a Bear/Wolf
Den until their Wolf year. Before we change to our present Tiger
method, we ran them like a Den. We had a 50% success rate. Our
District has a lower success rate.
I am not putting her Pack down, in-fact her Pack should be use as an
example of good program. Our Packs have a successful program because
the Packs are run by adults who put a lot of work to create a
successful program. Her Pack has 120 Scouts and between our Pack and
the Pack that split off from us, we have 140 Scouts. But I dont feel a
Wolf/Bear Den structure lends itself for Tigers in the average Pack.
After watching Tigers for 4 years, I learned Tigers aren't ready for a
Wolf/Bear Den program in the average Pack. Polls in our district back
this up. First graders can't read, very low attention span and are
almost haft the size of the Webelos. Their maturity level is very
different from second graders.
Alsoo, making a Tiger Den like the Wolf/Bear den structure adds one
more year of the same thing. Boys need change to stay interested in
Cub Scout for five years. Most Bears are wanting change after two
years of the Wolf/Bear Den structure. The Webelo program should be
different to keep the boys interestd. Also, you will find most adults
are ready for the change as well.
As a Cub Master I watch all ages close. The Tiger age and the Webelo
age is the most difficult for a Pack. They have entirely two different
personalities. They require two entirely different programs. From the
Cub Master stand point, planning a Pack meeting that entertains both
Tigers and Webelos requires a lot of creativity.
I am not saying that Judy's Pack should change their program. Her Pack
is successful with their current Tiger program. Experience has shown
me most Packs are more successful with the present Tiger program. It
is designed for the age boys involved and keeps the boys and adults
interested for the next level of Scouting.
