Killing bacteria on vegetables?

I am taking a group of Scouts to the Pan American Jamboree in Guatemala the
end of this
month. I am looking for a safe way to prepare vegetables without having to
soak them in
bleach or iodine, or having to cook the life out of them. I have heard
there is another kind
of solution that can kill of the bacteria that does not leave as much of an
after taste as
bleach or iodine. Does anyone know of such a solution for food preparation?
