Before you start talking about disciplinary codes, Boards of Review
and so on stop and think ...
If these kids are taking Ritalin it means they have Attention Deficit
Disorder. This is a neurological DISABILITY. Read the Disability Awareness
MB pamphlet. People with ADD have problems focussing their attention.
They are often impulsive, disorganised and have a short fuse. Some are
hyperactive , moving from task to task without completing anything.
Others just " space out " and tune into their own thoughts.
Let me try to explain what it is like. Say that in fifth grade you could
do junior high algebra one day and the next you could write 7x9=56 in
a simple arithmetic test. Imagine wanting to play soccer in the
schoolyard, but not being picked because you forget which way you are
supposed to be kicking, or who is on your team. Imagine knowing that you
are in the top 5% of IQ , in a selective school , but sometimes having to
spend five hours a night to keep up , because when you finish a page of
your coursebook you realise that you have already forgotten the previous
page. You would probably feel pretty frustrated.
Scouting is good for ADD kids because it offers variety, structure and a
chance to be accepted as one of a gang.
I have been a Scout Leader for nearly 25 years. Before that I was the ADD
kid I have tried to describe
