A year or two before my sons and I got involved in Scouts, about 1985, the
troop we joined went to the ROCKY NATIONAL FOREST backpacking. Just where,
I don't recall. They had a great time but were met at the trailhead coming
out, by a Ranger. He presented them with a citation for _not_ staying on
the marked trail and thereby damaging the eco-system of the park. There was
a hefty fine involved too. Somehow the troop felt they had done no wrong!
(I never could understand the reasoning.) There trail WAS marked, the rules
WERE clearly posted, they WERE _WRONG_, they WERE caught and (grudgingly)
they DID pay the fine. (The troop NEVER returned to that area)
I contend that common sense says "Stay on the trail, EVEN IF THERE IS NOT
RULES OR SIGNS".
Have a great trip and stay on the trail!
