Yes, I went to the Scout Office and bought an Insignia Guide this morning.
1. Religious emblems for Scouts and Scouters (not including Cubs, Explorers,
etc.) are treated minimally and no satisfactory conclusion can be drawn from
what I read. Page 25-26.
2. The Eagle Medal - Adults wear only on formal or dress occasions. Page 22.
3. The Arrow of Light is pictured on the pocket with no overlap of the
pocket seam. Page 16. Page 22 states "Boy Scout, below left pocket". Below???
4. Eagle Cloth (Patch) - Boy Scout, left pocket. Adults wear square knot.
Regarding No. 4, Page 5 under "Badges of Rank Are for Boys" states "Scouters
SHOULD (emphasis is mine) neither seek awards designed for boys nor wear
them on the Scouter uniform except for square knots representing the ....
Eagle Scout Award ....." First, since adults are now prohibited from earning
ranks, part of the statement is inconsequential and superfluous. Second the
use of "should" instead of "are required to" or "are prohibited from" is
significant in that it is open to individual interpretation as in "you
SHOULD brush your teeth three times a day". Further confirmation of the
aforementioned statement's imprecision is obtained from the precise
statement on belts - "Adult leaders wearing the tan uniform wear the
official olive web belt with the metal Boy Scout Buckle" - which leaves no
interpretive room. Now there is a rule everyone observes. 8-^)
To my previous comment stating the idea of removing the Eagle patch from
adult uniforms is devoid of intelligence, I add that the insignia
regulations are poorly written. Adult wearing of the Eagle patch should be
left to choice. On second thought, use of the word "should" does leave it to
On a brighter note, I drove to Henderson KY yesterday, picked up my grandson
and took him to the first meeting of White Horse Lodge 201. White Horse is
the name Wapiti and White Feather Lodges chose upon their merger. For you
patch traders, the new flap(s) SHOULD be available by mid-March. The Charter
Flap, Section Flaps and NOAC Flap (4 in all) will be non-restricted this
time. There will also be a "Death" Patch which will be ordered one time
only. Since I am not a trader, this is not a solicitation for orders.
