A fellow from Maine named Gil Gilpatrick, has written a number of books
regarding canoing, snowshoeing, camping and guide work in the Adorondacks.
At least one of his books has plans for a backpack style kitchen box. Works
great for his guided canoes trips into the wilds of Maine. Your library
should be able to get a copy for you to check over. Looks like just the
right idea for certain situations. Not all troops need the traditional
patrol boxes and this design might work good in that case. As I recall, it
was light weight and waterproof, being finished inside and out with
fiberglass cloth and resin. Once camp wass set-up, the packs were usable as
seats and he had painted the tops as game poards for chess/checkers etc.
