After reading Scouter Byron Hines reply about FREENET and
Scouts Canada, I did a quick browse of some of the LINKS
he provided, in particular, http://www.scouts.ca/
Being a realative WEB novice myself, I think it looks great,
even on a cheapo 486 running and Netscape 1.1
Do any of the Canadian scouters know how much (IF ANYTHING)
it cost your National COuncil to go up on the WEB. From
the lists of DONATIONS on the home page, it looks like
the cost could have been zero.
I know our local FREENET support people have been willing to
host a local BSA council and OA home page, but the former
local council exec was unwilling to approve anything, because
of the Jere Ratcliff memo.
I also contacted a local commercial site that supports WEB pages.
see http://www.insv.com/ They provide startup commercial pages
for as low as $300. And estimated a SIGNIFICANT multipage menu
for BSA could be set up for at MOST $10,000-$12,000.
And this is retail, not via FREENET.
I am rambling again. I just wanted to say what a great site
that scouts Canada already has active, while BSA is still
just in the budget phase.
