I couldn't help jumping in on this one. We just ran our pinewood derby
(2 wks ago) for 110 scouts. We used the Stern's method and had each
scout run 9 races. This allowed each boy to race 9 times, twice on each
lane plus one other race (we have a 4 lane track). We ran 4 divisions,
Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos with the top 4 from each division going
to the pack finals.
Time for all races: less than 4 hours.
Number of scouts in tears: NONE
Each scout received a place ribbon (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th) per race and the
top 4 finishers in each division got trophies. We also award trophies
for style: Best by Scout, Brightest Paint Job, Most Unique/Unusual, and
Fun was had by all.
WE WILL NEVER NEVER DO ANOTHER DOUBLE ELIMINATION RACE - the tearful
scouts are not worth it. Plus this is easier to run and more fun for all.
