Mike Walton's mail got me thinking about this.
My council has a couple of different versions of this concept.
On the same day as the Cub Scout Pow Wow (and typically at the same location),
the Boy Scout side of the program holds a 'Rendevouz' (or however that is
spelled :-) ). It has a format very similar to the Cub Scout POW WOW,
but is focused on Boy Scout topics.
The other program is OSI. We used to have SHOWANDO weekends (very
worthwhile), but we have changed to Outdoor Skills Instruction. The
two programs are similar in that they are both hands-on skill oriented.
They differ in that the SHOWANDO was a set of hour long sessions on
lots of different topics (1st aid, cooking, compass, etc.). The OSI
program takes one topic and spends a whole weekend on it. I haven't
been able to work an OSI weekend into my schedule, but I have heard
good reports about them, particularly the winter camping instruction.
