The folks who advocate legalization of marijuana argue that it is harmless.
To be sure it is less harmful than toadstools or strychnine, both of which
are also 'natural.' I have only anecdotal evidence to work with, plus a
First, the Scout Law requires Obedience. As defined in the Handbook,
Obedience includes obeying unpopular laws while working peacefully for
their change. If the marijuana advocates are as numerous as they claim,
they should simply go vote and change the law.
Second, there are published studies that marijuana smoke is more harmful
than tobacco smoke in terms of carcinogens; on the other hand, some of that
problem may be due to 'difficult' conditions in growing and distributing.
I have, however, seen children who were 4.0 students in elementary school
toke up, drop out, fail, fail, fail, build self-esteeem problems, and wind
up with menial jobs rather than putting their potential to work for
humanity. I have had more than one such child wake up suddenly some years
later and sitting in my living room or my office crying their hearts out at
the wasted years. I have had more than one of them confirm their belief
that starting with cigarettes [gee it's fun to break the law], then
marijuana cigarettes [cigarettes didn't kill me, so the law can be stupid,
so let's move on], had led to worse things [here, cocaine].
The other day I had a woman in tears in the police department; she had been
arrested, along with her husband, for hosting a pot and pill party for some
11 andd 12 year-olds on their way to school one morning. She was saying
that marijuana was harmless, after all it grows out their naturally.... the
school had called because four of these kids were bumping into the walls,
and a fifth was bouncing off the walls [not so Mentally Awake]. Harmless.
Today I will be preparing the criminal complaints for the six adults
involved in all of that as it emerges into the light. Sure mj grows out
their naturally. So do toadstools. So does the opium poppy. So does death
camas. So do the tar pits.
Not all that Creator set out in the world is harmless. Sadly we had to
arrest a former Scout for dealing mj and for burglary.
