A variety of posts have offered advice to the beleaugered SM who is
called by 'every parent in the troop wanting to know if X event is
cancelled.' There appears to be one point that has been missed:
Any questions should be directed to the SENIOR PATROL LEADER.
Many troops have used Emergency Preparedness merit badge to
develop a "phone tree" for emergency mobilizations, cancellations,
reminding of meetings, etc. Typically, the SM consults with the SPL
to reach a decision. Then the SPL calls the patrol leaders, who see
that everyone in their patrol is called. Sometimes the last person in
the chain calls the PL back to confirm the system worked.
Inquisitive parents could be politely told that the SPL is the first person
informed of meeting cancellations, etc, and if there are any questions,
their son should call HIM. I've known SM's (like me) who have taken
the phone off the hook for a few hours, just to insure the system works
as it was previously designed to.
Just my .02 . . .
