I hope most people on this listserv are familiar with the "original" Good
Turn story - how a British Scout helped American businessman, William
Boyce one day in London. This unknown Scout's Good Turn was the impetus
for getting the Scouting movement started in the United States.
Given that this is also December's Cub Scout theme, my Webelos I den
performed this skit - two actors, 4 narrators, and 5 prop holders (two
"bedsheet" storefronts, and a street lamp) at our Pack meeting last
night. I can honestly report that the audience was the quietest and most
attentive in my four year history with the pack. Thanks to the
Scout unit(s) that included the Good Turn story in their Web pages.
But, our Webelos didn't stop there. They also performed their own Good
Turn. Here are excerpts from an article, which with the Good Turn story,
will be sent to our local newspaper, and our Council monthly newspaper:
"Today, this Scouting ideology remains intact as evidenced by
the Webelos I den of Pack 114, Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. On
Saturday, December 9, the eleven Webelos I Scouts performed their
version of a Good Turn by serving a holiday feast to the twelve
retiree residents of the Washington Heights apartments.
The families of these Webelos each prepared an entree, and
delivered it to the lounge of the apartment building where the
residents waited. Each place setting had a candy cane sled loaded
with miniature presents as a decoration. The Scouts joined in
reverent silence as a blessing was offered. Then the residents helped
themselves to the huge buffet consisting of ham, turkey, dressing,
potatoes, gravy, vegetable casseroles, salads, relish trays, buns and
desserts. The Scouts were attentive waiters and helped refill plates
and cups as needed. When the meal was over, the residents invited
the boys to help themselves to some dessert.
The residents: Bill Upchurch, Bob Wiese, Bi Nelson, Marjorie
Miller, Lois Paulsen, Florence Gierent, Virginia Ward, Francis Miller,
Wanda York, Ruth Hollingshead, Orpha Lorsch, and John Stephens,
were extremely appreciative of this gesture by the Webelos and very
pleased to visit with them.
The Webelos Scouts: Blake Adams, Jeremy Andersen, Logan
Anderson, Tommy Brooks, Aaron Bryan, Josh Duncan, Brian
Stephens, Travis Stoltz, David Vandermeulen, Levi Walker and Seb
Wood were just as delightfully pleased with their warm reception!
Their leaders, Barb and Mike Stephens couldn't have been more
proud - the Scouts were exemplary in their behavior and eagerness
By all accounts, these Webelos indeed "Did Their Best."
Events such as these most assuredly reinforce one of the basic tenets
of Scouts around the world - "Do a Good Turn Daily!""
I am indeed proud of these Webelos and equally proud to be part of the
organization that helps mold this ideology into boys and girls around the
