The idea of a rotating award for dens with the best attendance is a
good one. We on the GW district RT staff have taken this a step
further; we have a totem we award to the unit which has the best
turnout at roundtable each month. I made the totem this year; it's a
length of alder pole, sanded and stained, with feathers and a sign
attached to the top with leather. The sign (an oval shaped piece of
wood) reads "CRT Showup Stick". The showup stick is decorated and
returned at the following RT, where a new unit gets to decorate it.
We also give beads for attendance at RT, and we are starting tomorrow
night to give a really pretty bead to anyone who brings someone new to
RT. We have found that if you get RT attendees addicted to adding to
their bead totems, they'll do almost anything for one.
This works with den meetings, too. One of the best dens in my cub
pack awards beads for all sorts of things, including attendance,
proper uniforming, participation in pack and den events and outings,
etc. The kids compete to see who can collect the most.
