My committe came up with a creative solution for a boy who had not
properly completed his First Class orienteering requirement. WHen he was
reviewed, it became clear that, though this was signed off, it had not
been signed by one of the troop leaders, but rather by his brother, an
Eagle Scout who did the requirement with him over college vacation. The
Saturday before he was to obtain his rank, I and a BoR member met the
Scout and had him review, in the field, the proper use of compass, map
and pacing. We had him follow a brief course and he really did know his
If he had not known this, I suppose we would have taught him and had him
do the mile course.
The Scout liked the attention and liked showing his skills. Everybody
gained and brother didn't loose face, though he was offered an
opportunity to sign on as an ASM with the troop.
