It is important that the fund raising efforts of one person or group not
undercut those of another (within the Scouting structure). Since the you need
to process an app through council BEFORE any money earning project (including
soliciting donations), whether they approve the app or not should give a clue
on whether to solicit from Coca-Cola.
Many years ago, I worked with the council finance person to arrange for a
relatively small ($400) donation from an individual. Part of the purpose
was to test the waters for a major ($100,000) donation which would be solicited
a year or so down the road. After I got the original gift (check arrived made
out for $500, $100 extra), we reexamined the potential. Net result was
more than double our planned $100,000. Had this person been approached by
individual units for small donations, I supect the end result would not have
been good. In fact, he became rather annoyed when several troops heard about
his generous donation and decided to approach him for stuff for their unit--
without going through council. Fortunately, we were able to patch things up
and salvage support for a capital campaign.
Guess the moral of the story is that you really do need to check before you
solicit corporate donations.
