It's also time as well, Gary, to remind folks that will be leaving us for
the Holiday Break as to how to go about either SUSPENDING or LEAVING
Scouts-L until they come back in the New Year.
If you are TEMPORARILY LEAVING for the holidays (semester break, vacation,
my personal case, a recall to Active Duty to work with military units in
Germany (more on this in a separate posting) ), you should consider SUSPEND
your "subscription" on Scouts-L by setting your "subscription" to NOMAIL.
This keeps you from getting up to 600 or so email postings from Scouts-L
over the period that you may be away. When you come back, all you have to
do is tell the listserver that you are ready to accept mail again.
If you are PERMANENTLY LEAVING and will perhaps establish a new email
account when you return to us, you should consider LEAVING Scouts-L by
"subscription" to SIGNOFF from the list.
Don't worry...we'll still all be here when you get back, no matter if your
break is short for the holiday season, or a little longer until you find
another way to get your email. We'll hold your place, and the listserver
will even keep a
log of the messages you missed (it's always available) so you can request and
review it when you come back (if you feel that you would miss something
while you're gone...I do it all of the time when I have to go away and come
back here! *smiling*)
If you DO NOT do either, and just let your mail go onward while you leave,
it creates a large hardship on your host system, which may not be able to
store so much mail over the period. It also makes you have to wade through
it all when you do get back. More importantly, this also increases the
amount of work that Jon (and Gary, subbing in for Jon) has to do at the end
of each semester. It's a real pain to have to manually delete each and
every person that leaves our list, only to have them to send a message
stating "I really didn't want to get off the list...I just wanted my mail to
be held until I got back!"
This also keeps duplicate messages and postings from "bouncing" between various
networks, and could save *your* system administrator some pain and trouble in
trying to correct it for you while you are away.
Send the following commands to the *automated listserver* WITHOUT a
signature file or other attachments. Here's the address:
There's nobody physically there, so the program cannot read anything except
a) if you are TEMPORARILY LEAVING, and are coming back to this same account
after the break, in the body of the message, please place the following command:
b) if you are PERMANENTLY LEAVING our "Roundtable which NEVER ends", in the body
of the message, please place the following command:
We all value your participation here on Scouts-L. Without you, this list
would be nothing more than a simple Q&A for the few of us that have been
"coaching the game of Scouting" for many years. Again, I encourage you to
activily participate in our daily discussions, to state your feelings and to
"agree to disagree" with others here. Remember, as Gary and Jon stated, the
rules here are simple, but they've lasted us for well over five years. If
you're not familiar with them, please request a copy of the WELCOME file
from the listserver. These same commands are listed within that file.
If you do have problems leaving us, please let Gary Hendra (or Jon Eidson,
when he gets back from a great set of trips!) know and they will try their
best to solve it for you...posting it here on the list does little.
And do please come back to join us all when you can, if you can. We will
all miss you, and your prescence here on Scouts-L, whether you posted or not.
We all hope that this has been a resource that has helped you to become a
better leader of a youth program, supervisor of other adults, or career
leader of our
