OK guys, I need your help. Here's the situation. Our current SM is stepping
down in January, the incoming SM hit the Troop Committee with this plan for
the Troop at a meeting 10 days ago. IF he takes over he wants to have
patrols meet on an individual basis each week and as a whole Troop once a
month. This person is an Eagle and this is the way his Troop met in 1963.
Until his son graduated into Boy Scouts last February he had been a den
leader for the Pack and Advancement Chair for the Troop.
I was floored by these plans. I have been with the Troop only since February
when my son came up. I completed SMF the weekend after my son was brought
into the Troop so yes I do know how a Troop is supposed to be organized. I
was given the task of working with the new Scouts since then. The very first
thing I did was go to the SM and make arrangements for Troop Guides for the
new patrols. Now just shy of a year later we have about 80% of the new
Scouts with a First Class rank. Boy run, boy taught.
I have voiced my objections to this new organizational proposal at the last
meeting trying to work from a position of compromise. We are having another
meeting to hash things out on Wednesday evening so I would appreciate your
opinions sent by private e-mail ASAP. This is a very "traditional" Troop as
far as there past leadership goes and as their first woman ASM I feel that
my concerns are not taken seriously. Am I over-reacting to this plan?
BTW, my son says that he does not like the plan, "I thought I was done with
Cub Scouts?". He says that he does not want to leave his friends in the
Troop, so switching to a different Troop is not really an option he wants to
Please be as honest as possible with your replies. I need to know if I'm
being a hysterical female (that would be a first) :)
