I carry a police radio on such excursions, and once when one of our
vehicles went off a snowy road, was able to use it to get help. It works in
our own county, of course, provided you are not in a valley without a
repeater "in sight."
Cell phones work in some locations as well.
I think it makes a nice emergency back-up, especially as there is always
the possibility, however remote, that you will be looking for a dustoff.
