Mobile Telephone on Campouts

Be careful what you ask for, you may get it. Last night I received
the call I had been hoping for: asking me to be the next Scoutmaster
of our Troop.
Is it practical to use a mobile telephone for emergency communications
on campouts and hikes? Do the woods create enough of an obstacle to
prevent communications? Or are most parks and camps outside of the
range of most services?
