For those interested in Urban Legends, and as requested by the Nault family,
here is the recipe for Antoinne's Red Cake:
1/2 cup shortening, 1/2 cup butter
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs - do not separate
mix, cream well & add the following paste:
2 oz. red food coloring (Yes, I know this is two bottles, it's supposed to be
red, not pink)
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
2-1/2 cups cake flour, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla
Remove beater and add 1 teaspoon vinegar & 1 teaspoon baking soda & fold in.
Place in three 8 inch cake pans.
Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
Let the cake cool in the pan! It is very fragile and will break if you try
to remove it hot.:-(
Red Cake Frosting:
5 Tablespoons flour
1 Cup sweet milk
Cook until thick as paste, stir constantly. Cool , with lid on, a little,
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 lb. butter
1 Teaspoon vanilla
Beat for 15 minutes, and frost cake.
Disclaimer: Every time we tried this recipe the cake broke. However, this
does not affect the flavor, it just makes it difficult to feed to company.
Good luck! ;-)
