Troop 403, Doraville Georgia, had an Eagle candidate do an organ donor
sign-up program in 1986. That was the year that BSA had a nationwide
donor awareness program.
This Scout prepared information packets which included the BSA donor
awareness broshure, information from variuous other foundations which
operate awareness programs, and a donor card which could be signed
and witnessed. Over 2000 of these were made up by the Scout and his
helpers, a speaker program was organized by the Scout wherein speeches
were made and the packets were handed out at church services, and
other community meetings, including a return mail card for people who
made the commitment to be donors. Over 200 people actually signed
up as organ donors, and many more learned of the importance of
organ donation! The Eagle projects goal was to sign up 100 people
as actual (signed and witnessed cards) donors.
