I must agree with Ian Ford in that all I have read indicates that
Scouting started after the publication of "Scouting for Boys", which
was publishes in installments after the ideas were tried out on
Last year I saw a Television program on which they interviewed one of
the original boys from Brownsea Island. He sadly died shortly
afterwards, but thos Brownsea Island boys were clearly the first who
could rightly call themselves "Scouts" as we now know them.
I dis read somewhere recently that Baden-Powell was consulted by the
Boys Brigade and I think that was in 1904! It was partially his
disatisfaction with some parts of their program that decised him to do
something on his own behalf.
