Another source of information (and fun reading) is a series of books
written by Jan Harold Brunvand. He has collected many of these "urban
legends" and analyzed where they come from and why they spread. Almost
all of the stories have the disclaimer "I heard this from a friend of a
friend" but efforts to track down the actual person an event happened to
is never successful. One of his books is _The Choking Doberman and Other
"New" Urban Legends_ (W.W. Norton, 1984, Library of Congress call no.
GR105 B687 1984) and there are several others.
To bring this back to Scouting, some of these stories might be used to
illustrate the problems of spreading rumors and telling tales without
knowing all the facts.
