Well, the winner of the "clove hitch around a tree" contest was...

quick as Mr. Van Elsen. Better luck next time!
Although a lot of you got more verbose :<) than you needed to, you all
had the same general idea. For the record, it's really quite
simple--you tie the clove hitch outside the boundary of where you can
stand, then simply tighten it up. In other words, imagine that you
are tying a clove hitch around a tree twenty feet thick, then simply
tighten it up to finish. It requires about 50 feet of rope, and can
be done with a patrol, or with as few as 2 people.
