Pete Farnham suggested taking Webelos to visit an elected official. We took my
oldest's son's 2nd year Webelos den to visit our mayor. It was great. Our
mayor also spent about an hour with the Scouts explaining various types of city
government and how our city operated. The boys were very attentive and asked
some really good questions.
Now the humor...
After talking with the Scouts the mayor decided to show them his office. He had
a replica(?) of an old-time mechanical bank that just fascinated the boys. The
bank was Uncle Sam standing with a valise at his feet and his hand stretched
out. The mayor took a penny from his pocket, placed it in Uncle Sam's hand and
pressed the button. The bank shook and rattled, the valise opened and faster
than you could see, the figure threw the coin into the valise. Then the valise
snapped shut and Uncle Sam's hand went back out. The boys stood for a second in
silent amazement then turned to me and I said,
"And now you understand taxation."
