Perhaps you filled them too full. In my experience, half full was far
enough. I've used sawdust instead of dryer lint; perhaps the sawdust was
more absorbent. A little was leaked through, but just by placing them on
newspaper until they dried, I had no problem. Try putting birthday candles
in them for easy wicks.
I use mine in my woodstove...makes lighting it ever so much easier. ;)
