Camping: Egg carton fire starters

At Webelos Woods training, they showed us a neat way of making fire starters
by putting lint (from the clothes dryer) into the compartments of a cardboard
egg carton and filling the compartments with wax. Then each compartment can
be broken off and used like a briquette to help start a campfire.
We this method at last night's den meeting. Only problem was that the melted
wax soaked through the egg cartons and made a mess. I'm sure we're missing
something elementary here. Any Help?
Also, any other campfire tips would be appreciated.
