Officially, they are considered youth members, and therefore need
to wear the Eagle Badge and the Arrow of Light Badge on their DDI
(Distinctive Dress Identity) or on the standard kelly green or tan
field uniforms, if they choose to do so.
Unofficially, I've seen many (and this included myself, when I
worked for the BSA while in college) Explorers wear the Eagle and
Arrow of Light (and others, like training award) square knots on
their field uniform shirts, without a lot of "static" about it.

The BSA has modified the "line" between youth and adult members
that many of us are still confused. The present LINE is that
anyone 18 years of age or older is considered as an ADULT with the
exception of those Explorer members 18, 19 and 20 years of age.
They are still considered youth members. In the past, there was
some confusion between the 18 year old Associate Advisor and the
18 year old Explorer. That confusion is now over.

Yeah, we're cutting hairs here, Will...the basic rule of thumb is
that youth members wear the patch or badge associated with the
award; adults, because we cannot wear the youth awards, wear the
