I know that BSA policy is to award a CS his rank as soon as he earns it,
but our Pack has traditionaly awarded Wolf, Bear & Webelos ranks at our Blue
& Gold dinner in February along with arrow points earned (Bobcat badges are
presented in October). It has been our experience that the boys have not
completed all their requirements until January. This year, I have a boy who
was so impressed at our recent Pack Meeting with other boys receiving Sport &
Academic belt loops, event patches, Webelos activity pins, that he decided to
earn his Wolf rank immediatly. According to his father (who just completed
Basic Leader Training), he has done 10 of the 12 requirements over the last 2
weeks and expects to have them finished before our November meeting. Dad
also tells me he has also completed over 30 elective points and will be due
his Gold and 2 Silver Arrows. The boy's Den Leader has some reservations as
to the boy's understanding and knowledge obtained in completing the
My question to the Scouts-L group is:
1) Do we award the rank now?
2) Award the rank with the rest of his Den in order to foster team spirit?
3) Does earning a rank mean that you have some comprehension of what you have
done, learning and using a new skill, showing teamwork with your Den & Pack,
or does it mean you went through the motions to get a signature in the book
without "Do Your Best".
Thanks for your ideas.
