America Online (AOL) does have a resource area for youth members to chat
with other youth on a realtime basis, supervised by trained "coaches" that
keep adults from the conversational area. It also has a resource area
whereby youth with school questions or problems can ask teachers to further
explain (not to solve the problem or get the information, but to clarify the
question or problem so that the youth can seek out the answers on his or her
Try keyword FAMILY or KID and see if any of that would help out your son.
The main reason why AOL doesn't offer Internet Relay Chat is because it
would go into direct competition with the hundreds of chat area found on
AOL's Lobby area. The Lobby area is one of the most frequently used areas,
and has been the site for many budding romances, get-togethers and reunions.
About a year or so
ago, when things were more level at the Walton household, I would have
coffee with about 22 others in the Coffee House on Saturday mornings before
the cartoons would get underway. It was a good way to spend a hour (most of
the moderated chat areas are run for a hour or hour and a half to give those
that have only a little time each month a chance to find something
interesting to spend those five hours a month on) to sit and talk with
others while having that first cup of coffee from the pot (oh, that first
cup....the best part of drinking coffee!!)!!!
***I don't work for America Online (AOL), just a longtime subscriber and fan of
the online service. I am sure that the other major online services have
similiar areas; please check with them as I am mostly familiar with AOL. ****
