I have to add my 2 cents of support to Marks commments of CUB
burn out! 5 years as a tiger/CUB/Webelos is a LONG time to keep the
boys AND THE parents interrested and entusiastic! (1 year tiger +
1 yr wolf, 1 bear and 2 webelos = 5 years) The burnout at the
tiger ro CUB level is almost the same problem that causes too
many 2nd year Webelos dens to run like a scout patroll!
And the same reason that we have some scouts at first class
at 11 and have 20 merit badges by the time they are 12.5 and
want to be an eagle!! And then other scouts that don't keep up,
loose interrest and quit scouts. When a kid has "done it ALL"
by the time they are 12, the scouting program starts to look
borring. And it is not often where you can have a 12 year old
as a SPL (senior patrol leader) that works.
I think that at ALL levels we have started to push the younger
boys into the OLDER scouts/cubs positions. We are forgeting
to keep it simple and MAKE IT FUN! And it also needs to be
interresting and a challenge. If WE adults are pushing these
younger boys into the NEXT level so they can have the FUN NOW,
we will just loose them later. They should want to go into
that NEXT level to have FUN at that level! Cubs or scouts!
I think the reason that CUB level numbers have increased, is
because of the 5 year programs, but I think that retention
of 2nd year webelos and scouts after 18 months is now a problem
facing many units. Moveing the the CUB program into Tigers,
and scouts into Webelos will hurt the long term program of
scouting. Retention of OLDER scouts has become almost an
