I wanted to thank all of you who sent me ideas for a a tree planting
ceremony earlier this month. Things had to be pulled together quite
quickly so that we could get the tree planted this fall before our winter
set in. For those who might have missed my earlier post, our Service
Unit replaced a pin oak tree that Girl Scouts had planted 50 years ago at
a local park, that came down in a blizzard / flood we had two years
ago. Fifty years ago the Girl Scouts dedicated the trees to World Peace.
Today we planted a new pin oak and re dedicated to world peace and friendship.
The Senior Troop held a Flag Ceremony, and spoke of there hopes for our world.
Then all the girls surrounded one of the original trees, and the new tree
and told what friendship meant to them. Pictures were taken to be added
to a time capsule, that was buried near the tree. Other items in the
time capsule included pledge cards signed by the girls, badges, and other
Girl Scout memorabilia. We ended the ceremony by singing "We can Change
the World" and a friendship circle. It was a cold, windy, wet day but
we had a good turn out, and I think the girls enjoyed the ceremony.
Several women joined us, that had been there for the original planting.
And we learned more about the original troop that had planted the trees.
