The Scouting IRC is available full time (except on those occasions when net spli
take it away fro a few minutes). It is indeed called #scouting, and it is kept o
through the good offices of Stefan Hauser, who maintains the bot - known as
ScoutBot, by the way - on a server at imp.ch (he works for the service provider,
is able to provide this for us).
The channel's traditional difficulty is that it was not well known. This, couple
with a lack of knowledge of how to use IRC (as well as lack of access from the
larger service providers, such as AOL, Prodigy, and so forth), has led to a low
volume in #scouting.
Fortunately, with the fantastically successful JOTI IRC activity (well over 500
separate nicknames used, often by several people at some sites) we now have a
"name". Since JOTI, there has been an increase in activity on the channel.
Our present concern is to develop a structure where we will be able to have some
planned activities for special times, such as JOTA/JOTI, Founder's Day / Thinkin
Day in February, and a proposed December/January holiday tradition exchange and
sharing between Scouts all over the world.
Aside from this, you can set up your own times to talk to each other on the chan
All you need to do is arrange your virtual meeting by e-mail or by discussing it
such fora as Scouts-L or rec.scouting (or any other similar maililng list or
newsgroup). If you feel a need for a moderator, we will try to accomodate you -
however there are not too many of us at this point in the channel's development.
you need help with guidelines, we will do our best to give you a hand thee, too.
If you log in to a server, and want to know if #scouting is ative there, you can
the /list command. Be prepared to see a WHOLE lot of really wierd channel names
descriptive titles, though... (Best to keep little eyes turned to some other
activity when you run the listing...). We will try to put together a list of ICR
servers that routinely carry #scouting at some point in the not-too-far-distant

I hope this gives you a better idea of what is going on with our IRC channel, an
hope that everyone will make use of it soon.
