I see my three children once a month, and Andy (my middle child) is enrolled as
a WEBELOS in Berea (where they live with their mother). When he comes to visit
here, we try to do some of the WEBELOS activities together. We did also had
a Pack to work with (but now that we've moved, I'm slowly trying to find a
Troop for Andy to belong to once he turns 11).
My best advice, as a non-custodial father, is to be there with your child
when you can be. I try to make the best of every weekend that I spend not
just with Andrew but also with Mandi and AJ as well (and he really needs it
more than the rest!)
Jessiann can help some, but when it comes down to it, it's really Dad that Andy
and the other two can look up to. It's really hard when you're "me" (with
everything that I've done and been) and working with your son. There's a
great tendacy to "re-create" yourself, trying to "better the original" all
the way around. This is the reason why I wouldn't want my son in any Troop
as Scoutmaster of.
