I may be able to speak to this, but of course I have a biased opinion. The
professional's role is administrative only. The volunteers run the program.
I know that a pro should set the example, but failure to wear a uniform at a
camporee is not a reason to speak to the SE. He has more important matters
at hand. This incident sounds as if there was a clash of personalities, not
BSA policy. If I were a new DE, or a fill-in and around volunteers that I
had not developed a relationship with, I would have worn the uniform. I have
an excellent relationship with my volunteers, and I just got back from our
Fall Camporee. I did not even pack my uniform, nor was anything said to me.
I have already established credibility within the district. I hope this
point of view helps.
