A lot of these YPP discussions are nit picking. On the other hand, we have
had at least three cases here in the New River Valley where people were
suspected of molesting scouts. In all three cases, these people were caught
because of thier activities outside of scouting and only then did anyone
begin to look at thier scouting activities. All three of these people did
or would have passed background checks. Two have lived here all of thier
lives. Two were known to me personally and one of those for about ten
years. I did not suspect or in hindsight have any reason to suspect them.
In another case in NCAC, a Scoutmaster was arrested and convicted of
molesting scouts. This was a person that I had known since he joined my
patrol at age eleven in the late sixties. I was his patrol leader.
Seventeen years later, I was suprised at his arrest.
You are right, the majority of us are good people but those few who are not
are forcing us to this. For the time being, I'm going to be watching you
and I expect you to watch me and all of us are going to continue to pick nits.
