In the George Washington District we too have experienced the fact that
the national PTA has again sent a letter to the local PTA's urging them to
drop sponsorship of Troops and Packs. The information in the letter is not
accurate. In the past we have found that it is best to determine the persons
in PTA leadership who support scouting and build our defense on them. We have
also found it wise to ask for a meeting at the very earliest time with the
PTA leaders involved. It is best to have your DE present since he/she is
usually most prepared to answer the specific questions concerning liability.
When we have used this method, we have usually been successful in keeping
the sponsorship with the PTA. Those that we lost have usually been in those
schools where the PTA leadership has been apposed to scouting all a long and
see this as a good way to get rid of the unit.
Yours in scouting, Bob Sargeant, DC for the GW District of NCAC, BSA. I used
to be a fox.
