My 2 cents worth on AGE for SM training, is more of a maturity
question, versus biological age. Is the 18 year old ready to
serve your unit in the role of ASM? Since both the OA and
Exploring allow for YOUTH members until age 21, I think we
should wait until at least 20 for SM training.
At our recent Wood Badge course we had a 20 year old on the
course. Some questioned if he should have been there.
However, he wound up doing very well and became a permanent
patroll leader, so he had the respect of the other members
of his patroll.
Some of US old farts maybe PRE-judged the KID. So I guess
as in many things today, we have to look at the whole person,
and understand his ability and knowlege, before we rush to
In general, I still think 20 should be MIN recomended for
SM training, and 21 for woodbadge, but YOUR MILAGE WILL vary.
I still have a problem with 11 year olds as OA members!
