The weekend before last at my Wood Badge course we were working on
Orienteering. On our course, to check each other, each patrol member was
encouraged to determine the proper bearings himself.
Two members of my patrol were getting widely varied results at the first
point, but neither were too expert with the compass. I took the bearings
myself using their compasses. It surprised me greatly that the two
compasses differed by more than 10 degrees!
The moral is, on such courses the error may be due to the compass and not
