OK, I'll add my $0.02 worth, since this has been a topic of debate in our
For a point of reference, we have Eureka! (as in "Eureka! It leaks!)
Timberline outfitter model tents.
If you don't put a ground cloth (g.c.) under the floor, moisture seeps
through the floor into the tent. If the g.c. is inside, then the tent is wet
inside and must be dried out before packing, plain and simple. If you don't
have a g.c. at all, then your equipment is wet, also. So we have the g.c.
outside, regardless of any benefit for mechanical protection.
If it rains, the floor leaks wherever it is exposed to water, mainly at the
edges where the floor material turns into sides. We have water-proofed every
seam, twice, and it doesn't help. Well, it does slow it down some. If the
rain is heavy enough that water comes in under the rain fly, the floor is
going to leak whether the g.c. is underneath or not. So a second one is
needed inside if it rains hard and you want to stay dry.
(WHOOSH! Flame on! Would somebody tell the logic behind having a floor
material that is KNOWN to leak water? It is one of the dumbest things I have
come across. I could have never imagined a tent that leaks sold as a matter
of course. And the customer knows it. Some modern miracle material, this
nylon. Any advantage over canvas in the weight department is lost in having
to have 2 g.c.'s. You might as well not have a floor at all and just use 1 g.c.
And now that I think of it, I would just like to see them get 4 men into one
of those 4-man Timberlines. Hah! Not on their best day would I get into one
of those with 3 other guys. Not on MY best day would 3 guys get into one of
those tents with me! I don't KNOW 3 men that well. Maybe my Dad and brother,
but that's it. Especially with any gear. Let's get real...
FREeep...gasp. flame off)
Does anyone know of a tent that doesn't leak that is suitable for scouts? We
need to buy some more. No more leakers for this SM...
I'm beginning to feel like Andy Roony... But I'm still
