Improve SCOUTS-L posts *LONG*

I had free time today and thought I'd look at SCOUT-L at little more
closely. I'm sure everyone who receives this has noticed that it has gotten
considerably longer lately - not only in the number of posts, but the number
of total lines. I'm sure that there are a lot of people who want to post who
have gotten their messages delayed because there is a maximum message/line
number that is sent out each day, either in digest or individual message.
Anyway, while looking through the postings in the SCOUT-L digest from 26
September, I noticed several things that we can all do to improve the list.
They will help cut down on download time and clutter. This is especially
important for people in areas who do not have a local node and are paying
long distance charges (and maybe on-line service charges) to download the
messages. I've also noticed that some people have been leaving the list
lately. Maybe they would still be on if there was less clutter.
1. SIGNATURE LINES: Its interesting to read where everyone is from,
especially from those outside the US. However, the last digest had signature
lines at the bottom of the messages that took anywhere from zero to 12
lines. The majority had 3 signature lines (3-5 was the top of the bell
curve). The signature lines "contributed" 350+ lines to the digest. If
everyone would concentrate on reducing their size, it would help us all.
2. REPEATING PAST POSTS: Another 315+ lines in the digest were repeated
lines from previous postings. It is important to have a little bit so
everyone will know what you are referring to but c'mon! I would encourage
everyone to delete as many of the repeat lines as possible - even
paraphrase. Also I noticed that several ">" lines could have been edited so
they took up less space by not indenting at one or both sides.
3. WRAP-AROUNDS: I'm sure everyone is familiar with wrap-around lines. These
use up more because the writer did not check the message before sending.
a little bit of time to check the message and margin settings in word
processing software if it was used before sending your messages.
4. INDENTS: Also there is the situation where people
have indents or margins in their input/message repeat.
It may help clarity a bit but is can also add lines
and aggravation. Once again, check your word processor
settings and messages before sending.
5. MULTIPLE POSTINGS: Numerous times, there have been several postings in
the daily digest from the same person. This means that each message has the
header and signature lines again to increase the size of the digest. (Hmmm,
sometimes it seems that the larger the signature lines, the more often the
multiple posts.) I would suggest that people use ONE posting each day to
answer all the past messages and additional input that they want to make. I
realize that this makes it a bit more difficult at the beginning of the
digest where the subject lines are listed and for those who get/answer
messages as they are received. Maybe it will allow more people to get their
messages through and eliminate excess lines for those who get the digest
6. And last, several messages have blank lines in their messages that are
totally unnecessary. Some have been even during/after their signature.
Please watch these too because they matter in the total line count.
