I sent this to Paul McGahee in reply to his search for folks to recognize
a new Eagle. In retrospect, I decided to post it to the list as well.
Subject: Eagle Awards
When I got my Eagle in '83, my mom had sent announcements to the president
and the governors of all 50 states. Every one of them replied with a letter
or certificate. Check out the National Eagle Scout Association for the
identity of Distinguished Eagle Scout Award holders and see about contacting
some of them. I have letters from all three members of the Apollo 11 crew.
Call NASA 'Johnson Space Flight Center' in Houston and talk to the
Astronaut Office. The Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxant River Maryland
or any other military institution and talk to the 'Public Affais Officer'.
Patton was on of my heros and his son GS Patton Jr. was commanding 2nd
Armored at Ft Hood. Mom got a nice letter from him that included a photo
of his father. Think about the Eagle's interests. Who has the job now
that he can only aspire to? Astronaut. Ship commander. Firefighter.
Maybe his elective merit badges will give you a clue. Just send them
If you want something from Bell Helicopter, send
it to P.O. Box 482, Fort Worth, Texas 76101
I have a three inch binder of letters from politicians (domestic and
foreign), war heroes, industrial leaders that was presented at my court
of honor. It means more to me now because my son is looking at it. It has
given him objective (read that: from outside the family) confirmation of
the importance attached to being an Eagle.
Hope this helps.
