I am among the group which feels that "political correctness" has gotten out
of hand and is unnecessarily squeezing a lot of humor out of our society.
OTOH, it may be possible to revise the Bellringer Skit to make it a little
more relevant to scouting and perhaps less offensive to those who might take
offense. What is essential to the skit is that the bellringer is unable to
use his arms to ring the bell, not that he is without arms. The bellringer
might be unable to use his arms to ring the bell for a variety of reasons.
For example, he may be unable to use his arms because they wrapped in bandages
due to burns he received on a recent Camporee because of unsafe handling of
liquid fuels. Or they may be wrapped in bandages because his fingers were
nipped by a bear (or other animal) he should have avoided. Or maybe they were
broken in a skiing accident when he skied off of the marked course.
