Our pack prefers the Colors (and I do too). It also lets the boys "show
off" their badges at pack meetings since we expect them to take their cap
off (if they wear one - it's usually not a Scout cap).
Our 1st year Webelos were extremely excited about forming patrols. There
are 10 boys in my "den" so we have 2 patrols. To avoid "choosing" sides,
I split them alphabetically (every other one is in patrol A etc.). This
provided a good mix for me of gregarious and shy boys.
I gave them 10 minutes to discuss a name and choose colors (limit of 3)
that can be used to make their patrol flag (I will purchase felt and a
dowel for each). They will make their flag at a meeting.
At our next meeting, I will let each patrol (Cobras and Dragons) select a
bead color for each of the Activity Badge groups (Physical, Mental,
Outdoors, Technology, and Community). One of our Craftsman projects will
be to "tool" a leather belt fob, and attach leather strings on which they
will place a bead for each Activity Badge completed. (This replaces our
whole group den doodle.)
Since we meet at the same time as the local troop, we do not have a den
chief, so each week I hope to have one or more "jobs" and will ask each
patrol to select someone from their patrol - and I expect everyone to be
selected. Some boys who are more knowledgeable about Boy Scouts wanted to
be patrol leader, but I discouraged this at this point. I may consider
this idea for their 2nd year of Webelos.?
